A peel with fruit?

Fruit acid peels have been on the market for several years in different variations. A mega popular treatment because it addresses many different skin problems. The treatment is also known as a chemical peel. But what is a chemical peel and what are the results you can achieve with it? I'm going to tell you in this blog.

Origins of fruit acids
Yes you read the title correctly. Then you may be wondering, "do you put fruit on your face then?" Well the thing is, fruit acids come from natural sources, they are often extracted from different fruits. For example, apples, citrus fruits or grapes, but this is not necessary. They are also extracted from milk, cane sugar and almonds. So a bit of a confusing name. As mentioned, the name also falls under the term chemical peel. When the peel is applied, a chemical reaction occurs in the skin, causing the peel to do its job. This stimulus increases the water-binding capacity in the stratum corneum so that the skin is able to retain more moisture. This will improve skin suppleness and skin texture. This is why it is also called a chemical peel.

AHA & BHA
Different fruit acids are used:
- AHA (alpha hydroxy acid)
- BHA (betha hydroxy acid)

The most well-known fruit acids used are: glycolic acid(AHA), lactic acid(AHA) and salicylic acid(BHA). These fruit acids have different actions.

The AHAs are water-soluble fruit acids. They loosen dead skin cells and new fresh skin cells reappear. AHAs stimulate cell renewal and improve moisture balance in the skin. Most well-known AHAs are glycolic acid and lactic acid. Glycolic acid is the smallest molecule of fruit acids allowing it to penetrate extra deep into the skin.

The BHAs in contrast are oil-soluble. This makes the BHA very suitable for oily skin because it dissolves the sebum. BHA is also known as salicylic acid. The BHAs, like AHAs, soften dead skin cells. Only the AHAs address more superficial skin problems.

Difference between a scrub and fruit acids
There are also products on the market that contain fruit acids, these have a lower percentage than the product used in the salon. The two both remove dead skin cells, but in a different way. A normal scrub contains a grain, when you massage it over the skin, you cause the dead skin cells to loosen and be removed from the top layer. This is only superficial, the top layer of skin is removed and the skin feels soft again. A chemical peel, on the other hand, penetrates deeper into the skin. This dissolves the sebum in the pores and softens the dead skin cells. This way is often milder and more effective than a granular scrub. This is not the only thing fruit acids can do. What I mentioned earlier, as the chemical reaction occurs, the lower layer of the skin is stimulated which improves circulation, reduces superficial pigmentation and facial scarring, creates new collagen, gives the skin a hydration boost and reduces acne. What is important to know is if scars are very deep or the pigmentation on the skin is caused by hormones, for example, it is not guaranteed to go away/stay away.

What does a treatment look like?
Treatment
is started with an intake interview. The skin is looked at and a few questions are asked. This is to ensure that the client does not have any contraindications that would prevent the treatment from being performed. You sign the intake form, so you agree with what was discussed. After this the treatment starts. The face is cleansed and any impurities are removed. Then the peeling is applied. The peeling may feel tingly/burnt. We build up the percentages of acids per treatment. We do this so that the skin can get used to it. The peeling will feel milder in the first treatment than in subsequent treatments. During the treatment we help you reduce the tingle. Then the peel is removed and we apply a cooling and caring cream. The days after treatment the skin may be a little red and some scaling may occur (this is not necessary).

No summer treatment
After treatment, the skin is sensitive to sunlight. Therefore, during 6 weeks after treatment, expose the skin to the sun as little as possible and use a cream with an SPF of at least 30. This is very important because after peeling the skin is thinner than normal. If you do this, hyperpigmentation can occur, for example, and you want to prevent this. Therefore, this treatment is often not done in the summer. After the treatment, you must not wear makeup for 48 hours, or go under the sun, swim or in the sauna. Do you only use a product with AHA/BHA at home? Then it is also important to apply a good SPF to your skin and not to go under a tanning bed.
